A bursa within the sinus between the peroneus longus and brevis tendons as they diverge in the distal retromalleolar groove, reducing friction between the two tendons as the longus passes to the plantar foot and the brevis inserts on the fifth metatarsal base.
Intertendinous peroneal bursitis between the longus and brevis contributes to lateral ankle pain in peroneal tendon pathology. Ultrasound demonstrates fluid between the two tendons distinct from tenosynovial fluid in the common sheath. Peroneal tendon split tears and longitudinal tears frequently coexist with intertendinous bursitis.
Fluid accumulation between the peroneus longus and brevis tendons in the retromalleolar groove producing lateral ankle pain, associated with peroneal tendon longitudinal split tears visible on MRI.
