Median Umbilical Fold Bursa

bursa plicae umbilicalis medianae

A peritoneal fold bursa associated with the median umbilical fold (urachus remnant) that runs from the umbilicus to the bladder dome. This fold may develop bursal tissue where it contacts the anterior peritoneal wall.

Region: Abdomen
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The median umbilical fold and its peritoneal bursa are relevant in laparoscopic surgery where the fold is a landmark between the right and left paravesical fossae. Urachal remnant cysts and sinuses arise along this fold and may communicate with the umbilicus or bladder. The fold is divided in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy to access the retropubic space.
