Medial Collateral Bursa (Elbow)

bursa cubitalis medialis

A small bursa exists at the medial elbow near the medial epicondyle and UCL that can become inflamed in overhead throwing athletes with medial elbow overuse. This is distinct from the olecranon bursa and from true UCL pathology but can contribute to the complex of medial elbow pain in throwers. Imaging differentiates bursitis from UCL tears and medial epicondyle stress fractures.

Region: Upper Arm
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Reduces friction at the medial elbow during forearm flexion and valgus stress activities

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Medial elbow bursitis contributes to the medial elbow pain complex in baseball pitchers and javelin throwers, producing pain at the medial epicondyle that must be differentiated from UCL injury by MRI arthrography.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Medial Elbow Bursitis

Medial epicondyle bursal inflammation in throwing athletes contributing to medial elbow pain managed with activity modification and injection.
