Lateral Umbilical Fold Bursa

bursa plicae umbilicalis lateralis

A potential bursal space adjacent to the lateral umbilical folds (covering the inferior epigastric vessels) where the peritoneum may develop inflammatory pouches in conditions affecting this region, particularly during laparoscopic hernia repair and peritoneal dialysis.

Region: Abdomen
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The lateral umbilical fold region is a key landmark in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (TEP/TAPP), where the inferior epigastric vessels define the medial boundary of the direct hernia space. Fluid collections adjacent to these folds after laparoscopic hernia repair may represent lymphoceles or bursae. Peritoneal dialysis catheter placement near the lateral umbilical folds avoids vessel injury.

Post-Laparoscopic Hernia Repair Fluid Collection

Fluid accumulation adjacent to the lateral umbilical fold after TEP/TAPP hernia repair, representing a seroma or small bursa, usually resolving spontaneously without intervention.
