An inconstant bursa located between the tibia and fibula near the proximal interosseous membrane, facilitating slight movement between the two bones during weight-bearing and rotation. It is more consistently found in the proximal tibiofibular region.
The interosseous bursa of the leg is rarely identified clinically but may become distended in inflammatory arthropathies or following trauma to the tibiofibular junction. It can communicate with the knee joint through the popliteus bursal recess in some individuals.
Bursal swelling at the proximal interosseous membrane presenting as a firm lateral knee mass, occasionally compressing the common peroneal nerve and causing foot drop.
