Intercostal Neurovascular Groove Bursa

bursa sulci costae intercostalis

Small bursae at the intercostal neurovascular groove on the inferior rib surface, between the neurovascular bundle and the inner surface of the rib. These reduce friction as the bundle moves with rib excursion during breathing.

Region: Chest
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Inflammation of the intercostal groove bursa contributes to intercostal neuralgia patterns that are exacerbated by deep breathing. It must be distinguished from rib metastases, pleural pathology, and herpes zoster. Intercostal nerve blocks target the neurovascular groove directly inferior to the rib angle to reach this space. Rib periostitis from trauma or radiation may involve these bursae.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Intercostal Groove Bursitis

Bursal inflammation at the inferior rib neurovascular groove producing intercostal neuralgia pattern pain worsened by breathing, reproduced by inferior rib palpation.
