Interclavicular Bursa

bursa interclavicularis

A small bursa in the interclavicular notch between the two sternoclavicular joints, beneath the interclavicular ligament. It reduces friction between the ligament and the underlying jugular notch of the sternum during clavicular movements.

Region: Chest
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The interclavicular bursa region is relevant in sternoclavicular joint pathology including subluxation and arthritis, where the interclavicular ligament may become inflamed. Posterior sternoclavicular dislocation — the most dangerous joint dislocation due to posterior mediastinal contents at risk — compresses structures immediately deep to the interclavicular region. Ultrasound-guided aspiration of the interclavicular notch area addresses both the bursa and the adjacent joint space.

Common Injuries & Conditions
