A small bursa overlying the infraorbital foramen on the anterior maxilla, between the levator labii superioris and the underlying periosteum. It may develop from repeated pressure at this point or from infraorbital nerve block procedures.
The infraorbital bursa region is of primary relevance in infraorbital nerve block anatomy, where the needle is inserted through the levator labii toward the infraorbital foramen. Repeated injections in this region for chronic pain (trigeminal neuralgia, post-herpetic neuralgia) may produce periosteal bursitis. Periosteal inflammation around the infraorbital foramen must be distinguished from sinusitis, dental pathology, and infraorbital nerve neuroma.
Periosteal irritation at the infraorbital foramen from repeated nerve block injections or direct trauma producing infraorbital cheek tenderness, managed with cessation of injections and topical anti-inflammatory measures.
