Trochanteric Bursa (Gluteus Minimus)

bursa trochanterica musculi glutei minimi

The gluteus minimus bursa is the deepest of the trochanteric bursae, lying between the gluteus minimus tendon and the superior trochanteric facet. Its inflammation contributes to greater trochanteric pain syndrome alongside gluteus medius tendinopathy. MRI shows discrete fluid signal between the minimus tendon and the trochanter when it is inflamed.

Region: Pelvis & Hip
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Reduces friction between the gluteus minimus and the trochanteric facet during hip movement

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Gluteus minimus bursitis is part of the greater trochanteric pain syndrome spectrum and is managed alongside gluteal tendinopathy with load management and targeted injection. Ultrasound-guided injection specifically targeting the gluteus minimus bursa is more accurate than landmark-based injection at the greater trochanter.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions
