Flexor Pollicis Longus Forearm Bursa

bursa tendinis m. flexoris pollicis longi (antebrachii)

A bursa around the FPL tendon in the deep forearm flexor compartment between the FPL and the anterior interosseous nerve, distinct from the wrist-level FPL radial bursa. It develops in deep forearm flexor overuse.

Region: Forearm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

FPL forearm bursitis contributes to forearm pain with thumb IP flexion in pianists and typists who make repetitive fine pinch movements. The anterior interosseous nerve runs adjacent and may be compressed by bursal swelling, producing AIN palsy with inability to flex the thumb IP and index DIP. Ultrasound identifies the bursal swelling at the AIN level.
