A small bursa at the femoral ring or within the femoral canal, between the femoral sheath and adjacent structures at the medial compartment of the femoral canal. It may enlarge to present as a femoral swelling below the inguinal ligament.
Femoral canal bursitis is rare but clinically significant because it presents identically to a femoral hernia: a non-tender or mildly tender swelling below the inguinal ligament, medial to the femoral pulse. Unlike a hernia, it is not expansile on Valsalva and does not have a cough impulse. Surgical exploration may be required for definitive diagnosis when imaging is inconclusive.
Bursal swelling within the femoral canal mimicking a femoral hernia, distinguished by absence of a cough impulse and non-expansile behaviour on Valsalva manoeuvre.
