A bursa associated with the EDL tendons at the ankle level, beneath the inferior extensor retinaculum. The four EDL tendon slips pass through the lateral portion of the inferior retinaculum and may develop a common bursa at this crossing point.
EDL ankle bursitis produces dorsal ankle pain localised to the lateral aspect of the retinaculum, reproduced by active toe extension. Ultrasound demonstrates peritendinous fluid around the EDL slips at the retinaculum. It is part of the fourth extensor compartment tenosynovitis complex at the ankle.
Peritendinous bursal inflammation around the EDL slips at the inferior extensor retinaculum producing lateral dorsal ankle pain with lesser toe extension activities.
