Epiglottic Petiole Bursa

bursa petiolus epiglottidis

A small bursa at the petiole (narrow inferior stalk) of the epiglottis where it attaches to the thyroid cartilage notch via the thyroepiglottic ligament, reducing friction during laryngeal elevation in swallowing.

Region: Neck
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The epiglottic petiole attachment is the surgical target in endoscopic supraglottic resections where the epiglottis is divided at its stalk. Epiglottitis most severely affects the epiglottic petiole region where oedema produces the characteristic thumbprint sign on lateral neck X-ray. Petiole fracture occurs in direct laryngeal trauma.
