Common Extensor Origin Bursa

bursa originis communis musculorum extensorum

A small bursa between the common extensor tendon origin and the underlying lateral epicondyle, reducing friction at the extensor origin during forearm rotation and wrist extension. It may become inflamed in lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow).

Region: Upper Arm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Common extensor origin bursitis coexists with lateral epicondylitis in a proportion of patients, contributing to the tenderness at the lateral epicondyle. Ultrasound differentiates intratendinous tendinopathy from associated bursitis. Steroid injection at the lateral epicondyle may address both components simultaneously. The bursa is at risk during open lateral epicondyle release procedures.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Lateral Epicondyle Bursitis

Bursal inflammation at the common extensor origin contributing to lateral elbow pain indistinguishable from pure tendinopathy, identified by ultrasound as a small fluid collection deep to the common extensor tendon.
