Capitellum Bursa

bursa capitelli humeri

A small bursa between the capitellum of the humerus and the overlying common extensor tendon or radial head, reducing friction at the lateral elbow during forearm rotation. It may contribute to the lateral elbow pain complex alongside common extensor tendinopathy.

Region: Upper Arm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Capitellum bursitis occurs alongside lateral epicondylitis and osteochondral defects of the capitellum in adolescent throwing athletes (Panner's disease territory). Ultrasound and MRI identify bursal fluid at the lateral elbow adjacent to the capitellum. It is distinct from the radiohumeral joint effusion which is intra-articular. Aspiration provides symptomatic relief.
