Calcaneal Attachment Bursa (Haglund’s)

bursa calcanei (morbus Haglund)

The Haglund's bursa is a pathological bursa that develops between the prominent posterosuperior calcaneal tuberosity (Haglund's deformity) and the Achilles tendon, anterior to the retrocalcaneal bursa. It differs from the retrocalcaneal bursa by its location between the calcaneal prominence and the anterior Achilles surface.

Region: Lower Leg
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Haglund's deformity (pump bump) produces a bony prominence at the posterosuperior calcaneus that causes chronic irritation of the Achilles tendon and the interposed bursa. The combination of Haglund's deformity, retrocalcaneal bursitis, and insertional Achilles tendinopathy constitutes Haglund's syndrome. Calcaneal ostectomy removes the bony prominence and the pathological bursa simultaneously. Ultrasound differentiates the Haglund's bursa from the normal retrocalcaneal bursa by its position anterior to the Achilles insertion.
