Buccal Space Bursa

bursa spatii buccalis

A potential bursal space in the buccal fat pad between the buccinator muscle and the masseter, where the buccal fat pad provides cushioning and reduces friction during jaw movement. The buccal space communicates with the masticator space and is a potential route for odontogenic infection spread.

Region: Head & Skull
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The buccal space bursa and fat pad are relevant in facial surgery and odontogenic infection management. Buccal space abscess from upper molar teeth presents as cheek swelling between the buccinator and skin. Buccal fat pad herniation through buccinator defects may mimic a buccal space mass. Buccal fat pad removal (bichatectomy) for facial contouring accesses this space. The facial artery and anterior facial vein pass through the buccal region adjacent to this space.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Buccal Space Abscess

Odontogenic infection tracking into the buccal space between buccinator and masseter producing facial swelling, trismus, and cheek induration, managed by incision and drainage with antibiotic coverage.
