A small bursa situated between the short head of biceps femoris and the lateral supracondylar ridge of the femur in the distal thigh. It protects the musculotendinous junction during knee flexion against the underlying bone.
Rarely symptomatic in isolation but can become inflamed following direct trauma or repetitive hamstring loading in sprinters. Tenderness localises to the distal lateral thigh above the fibular head, distinguishing it from proximal tibiofibular joint or LCL pathology.
Localised bursal swelling in the distal lateral thigh from repeated knee flexion loading, producing tenderness above the fibular head without LCL involvement.
