A small bursa between the articularis cubiti muscle (a small deep muscle attached to the elbow capsule, analogous to articularis genu at the knee) and the posterior distal humerus. The articularis cubiti retracts the posterior capsule during elbow extension and this bursa reduces friction at its humeral attachment.
The articularis cubiti bursa is rarely symptomatic in isolation but may be involved in posterior elbow pathology including elbow stiffness, posterior impingement, and olecranon fossa loose bodies. Identification of this small muscle during posterior elbow surgery helps preserve capsular retraction function. It is occasionally visible on MRI as a small posterior periosteal fluid collection at the distal humeral metaphysis.
Periosteal bursal irritation at the articularis cubiti attachment producing posterior elbow stiffness and deep aching, associated with repetitive elbow extension loading.
