Anconeus Lateral Bursa

bursa lateralis m. anconei

A small bursa between the lateral surface of the anconeus muscle and the lateral elbow capsule overlying the radial head, reducing friction as the anconeus slides over the capitellum region during elbow rotation. It develops from repetitive forearm rotation loading in racquet sport athletes and manual workers.

Region: Upper Arm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Anconeus lateral bursitis contributes to lateral elbow pain that may be confused with lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow). It is reproduced by direct palpation over the anconeus triangle and by passive forearm pronation. Ultrasound identifies the bursa as a small fluid collection deep to the anconeus. It is often an incidental finding in lateral elbow surgery for epicondylitis. Injection into the anconeus bursa provides diagnostic clarity when clinical examination cannot distinguish it from ECRB tendinopathy.
