Anconeus Bursa

bursa musculi anconei

A small bursa between the anconeus muscle and the posterolateral elbow joint capsule or lateral epicondyle, reducing friction during elbow extension. It is located in the posterolateral elbow at the triangular gap between the extensor carpi ulnaris, anconeus, and the elbow joint.

Region: Forearm
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Anconeus bursitis presents as posterolateral elbow swelling distinct from the olecranon bursa, which is more posterior. It may coexist with lateral epicondylitis and is distinguishable by its location over the anconeus triangle. Ultrasound confirms the bursal fluid collection. It is occasionally injured in posterolateral rotatory instability of the elbow.
