Premotor Cortex

area premotoria

The premotor cortex lies on the lateral frontal lobe just in front of the primary motor cortex, mainly in Brodmann area 6. It plans movements and links them to sensory cues, especially vision. It contains mirror neurons that fire both when performing and observing an action.

Anatomical Data

Structure & Connections

LocationLateral frontal lobe, anterior to the primary motor cortex, mainly in Brodmann area 6
Parts
  • Dorsal premotor cortex
  • Ventral premotor cortex
Connections
Blood SupplyMiddle cerebral artery
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Selects and plans movements based on sensory cues, especially for reaching and grasping, and prepares the motor cortex to act.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Damage tends to cause clumsiness and difficulty sequencing or choosing movements, rather than true weakness, sometimes with apraxia. Premotor lesions may also cause increased tone. It contributes to recovery after motor cortex stroke, taking over some functions of damaged areas.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Limb Kinetic Apraxia

Loss of fine, skilled movements of a limb despite normal strength after premotor damage.

Premotor Syndrome

Difficulty with movement sequences and visually guided movements after lateral premotor lesions.
