Vomer

vomer

The vomer is a thin, flat bone forming the posterior and inferior part of the nasal septum, articulating above with the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid and below with the palatine bones and maxillae.

Region: Head & Skull
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The vomer forms the inferior posterior nasal septum and is a common contributor to nasal septal deviation, which can obstruct airflow and contribute to snoring and sleep-disordered breathing. Septoplasty removes the deviated portion of the vomer and septal cartilage under submucosal elevation to preserve the mucosa. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma invades the posterior choana region adjacent to the vomer.
