Precentral Sulcus

sulcus precentralis

The precentral sulcus runs parallel to the central sulcus, just in front of it, forming the front border of the precentral gyrus. It is often broken into superior and inferior parts, and the superior and inferior frontal sulci usually join it. The junction of the superior frontal and precentral sulci is a common landmark on MRI.

Anatomical Data

Structure & Connections

LocationLateral surface of the frontal lobe, anterior to and parallel with the central sulcus
Parts
  • Superior precentral sulcus
  • Inferior precentral sulcus
Connections
Blood SupplyMiddle cerebral artery (precentral or prerolandic branch)
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Marks the front border of the primary motor cortex and separates it from the premotor areas.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Radiologists use the meeting point of the superior frontal sulcus and precentral sulcus to find the precentral gyrus and therefore the motor cortex. The premotor cortex and frontal eye field lie just in front of it. Lesions straddling it can affect both motor execution and movement planning.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Premotor Lesion

Damage just in front of the precentral sulcus that impairs planning and sequencing of movements more than strength.

Frontal Lobe Tumour

A tumour near the precentral sulcus that may cause seizures or weakness by affecting the motor strip.
