Medial Forebrain Bundle

fasciculus medialis telencephali

The medial forebrain bundle is a loose two-way bundle of fibres passing through the lateral hypothalamus. It links the basal forebrain with the midbrain and carries the dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin pathways that ascend to the forebrain.

Anatomical Data

Structure & Connections

LocationLateral hypothalamus, from the basal forebrain to the midbrain tegmentum
Parts
  • Ascending monoamine fibres
  • Descending forebrain fibres
Connections
Blood SupplyAnterior and posterior communicating artery perforators
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Major route for reward, motivation and arousal signals.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

In classic experiments animals worked hard to stimulate it, revealing reward circuits. Deep brain stimulation of its upper part is being investigated for severe depression.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Treatment-Resistant Depression

Severe depression for which medial forebrain bundle stimulation has been explored.
