T2-T8 Vertebrae

vertebrae thoracicae II-VIII

Vertebrae T2 through T8 are the mid-thoracic vertebrae that articulate with the corresponding ribs at their costal facets, contributing to the thoracic kyphosis and providing attachment for the erector spinae and semispinalis muscles.

Region: Spine
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The mid-thoracic vertebrae from T2 through T8 are the most rigidly supported part of the spine because of the rib cage and sternum. Fractures here from osteoporosis or trauma are less common than at the thoracolumbar junction but produce significant pain and deformity. The thoracic cord at these levels is at risk in epidural haematoma and abscess from the relatively small canal-to-cord ratio.
