Soleal Line

linea musculi solei

The soleal line is an oblique ridge on the posterior surface of the proximal tibia, running from the fibular facet on the lateral tibial condyle to the posteromedial border of the tibia. It provides the proximal attachment of the soleus muscle and marks the boundary between the proximal posterior tibial metaphysis and the proximal tibial shaft.

Clinical Notes

The soleal line is an important landmark on lateral tibial X-ray for distinguishing proximal tibial fractures from tibial shaft fractures. Stress fractures of the posterior cortex (fatigue fractures) occur at the soleal line level in military recruits with abrupt training increases. The popliteal vessels and tibial nerve cross over the soleal line as they pass from the popliteal fossa into the deep posterior compartment. The soleal line level marks the entry point for retrograde tibial nails.
