Proximal Phalanges (Foot)

phalanges proximales pedis

The proximal phalanges of the toes articulate with the metatarsals at the metatarsophalangeal joints and undergo significant loading during push-off in gait, with the great toe proximal phalanx particularly important in propulsion.

Region: Foot & Ankle
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Proximal toe phalanges are commonly fractured from stubbing or dropping heavy objects on the toes, with the great toe proximal phalanx being most clinically significant. Great toe fractures affecting the sesamoid articulation or producing significant displacement require more careful management than lesser toe injuries. Buddy taping and stiff-soled footwear provide adequate immobilisation for most toe phalanx fractures.
