The paired nasal bones form the bridge of the nose, providing the superior bony support for the nasal dorsum. They are the most commonly fractured facial bones, typically from direct anterior impact. The nasal bones articulate with each other at the inter-nasal suture and with the frontal bone superiorly.
Nasal bone fractures produce visible dorsal deformity, epistaxis, and nasal obstruction. Closed reduction under local anaesthesia within 10 to 14 days before fracture consolidation is the standard treatment for displaced fractures. Septum deviation from nasal fractures produces airway obstruction requiring septoplasty if persistent. Rhinoplasty osteotomies (medial and lateral) create controlled nasal bone fractures to narrow or straighten the nasal dorsum.
