Nasal Bone

os nasale

The nasal bones are paired rectangular bones forming the bony bridge of the nose, articulating superiorly with the frontal bone (nasofrontal suture), laterally with the frontal process of the maxilla, and inferiorly with the upper lateral cartilages. They form approximately the upper one-third of the nasal dorsum.

Clinical Notes

Nasal bone fractures are the most common facial fracture, sustained from direct anterior or lateral nasal trauma. They present with dorsal deviation, epistaxis, and tenderness. Plain X-ray has poor sensitivity — clinical diagnosis is standard. Closed reduction under local anaesthesia within 7-14 days before callus formation is the standard treatment. Open rhinoplasty addresses post-traumatic nasal deformity after swelling resolves. The nasal bones are the landmark for the keystone area of cartilaginous-bony junction important in dorsal reconstruction.
