Medial Supracondylar Ridge of the Femur

linea supracondylaris medialis femoris

The medial supracondylar ridge is the continuation of the linea aspera curving medially toward the medial epicondyle of the femur. It provides the proximal attachment for the medial head of gastrocnemius and the adductor magnus distal tendon, and is crossed by the descending geniculate artery.

Region: Thigh
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The medial supracondylar ridge is the site of medial gastrocnemius avulsion in tennis leg injuries, where the medial head tears at or near its femoral origin. Distal femoral fractures in the supracondylar region frequently propagate along this ridge. The popliteal artery runs immediately posterior to the supracondylar ridge and is at risk in displaced supracondylar femur fractures.
