The lateral supracondylar ridge continues from the linea aspera toward the lateral epicondyle, providing attachment for the lateral head of gastrocnemius, the short head of biceps femoris, and the lateral intermuscular septum. The popliteal surface of the femur is bounded above by this ridge.
The lateral supracondylar ridge is the origin of the lateral gastrocnemius head, which may avulse in proximal gastrocnemius tears. Distal femoral stress fractures in female athletes (female athlete triad) preferentially occur in the lateral supracondylar region. The common peroneal nerve passes adjacent to the lateral supracondylar region before curving around the fibular head.
