L2 Vertebra

vertebra lumbalis II

L2 is a large lumbar vertebra with a prominent body and strong transverse processes providing attachment for the psoas major and quadratus lumborum muscles. The L2 nerve root contributes to hip flexion and anterior thigh sensation.

Region: Spine
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

L2 vertebra marks the end of the conus medullaris in some individuals and the beginning of the cauda equina. L1-L2 disc herniation compresses the L2 nerve root, producing anterolateral thigh pain and numbness with hip flexion weakness. The lumbar plexus is formed by the anterior rami of L1 through L4 within the psoas muscle adjacent to the lumbar vertebral bodies.
