The interosseous (lateral) border of the tibia is the sharp ridge running along the lateral tibial shaft, providing the medial attachment of the interosseous membrane of the leg. It faces the corresponding interosseous border of the fibula across the interosseous space and is the reference for plate placement on the lateral tibial surface.
The interosseous tibial border is a critical landmark during tibial shaft ORIF, guiding anterolateral plate positioning. The anterior tibial artery passes through the interosseous membrane just below the proximal tibial border and is at risk in proximal tibial approaches. Periosteal stripping from the interosseous border during fracture fixation should be minimised to preserve tibial cortical vascularity.
