Superficial Perineal Pouch

spatium superficiale perinei

The superficial perineal pouch is the space in the urogenital triangle between the perineal membrane above and the membranous layer of superficial fascia (Colles fascia) below. It contains the roots of the penis or clitoris, their muscles and, in females, the greater vestibular glands.

Anatomical Data

Boundaries & Contents

LocationUrogenital triangle of the perineum, below the perineal membrane.
Boundaries
  • Perineal membrane above
  • Membranous layer of superficial perineal fascia (Colles fascia) below
  • Ischiopubic rami laterally
  • Perineal body posteriorly
Contents
  • Crura of the penis or clitoris
  • Bulb of the penis or bulbs of the vestibule
  • Ischiocavernosus, bulbospongiosus and superficial transverse perineal muscles

  • Perineal branches of the pudendal vessels and nerve
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Holds the erectile tissue and superficial muscles of the external genitalia.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Because Colles fascia is continuous with Scarpa fascia of the abdominal wall, urine or blood escaping into this pouch, for example after a straddle injury rupturing the bulbar urethra, spreads into the scrotum, penis and lower abdominal wall but not into the thighs. Bartholin gland cysts and abscesses arise in this pouch in females.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Extravasation of Urine From Bulbar Urethral Rupture

Urine leaking into the superficial pouch spreads into the scrotum, penis and lower abdominal wall, limited by the attachments of Colles fascia.

Bartholin Gland Abscess

Infection of a blocked greater vestibular gland in the superficial pouch, causing a painful swelling at the back of the labium.
