Contains the intrinsic muscles of the great toe.
Foot compartment syndrome follows crush injuries, calcaneal fractures and Lisfranc injuries, and the medial compartment is released through a medial incision that can also reach the calcaneal compartment. The medial plantar nerve and tibial vessels pass close to abductor hallucis, which can compress them.
Raised pressure in the compartments of the foot, usually after crush or calcaneal fracture, causing severe pain and, if untreated, clawed toes from muscle scarring.
