Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Holds the muscles that move the little finger and shape the ulnar side of the grip.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Hypothenar wasting suggests ulnar nerve damage at the elbow or in Guyon canal. Repeated striking with the heel of the hand can injure the ulnar artery next to this compartment, causing hypothenar hammer syndrome. The compartment is released through an ulnar incision in hand compartment syndrome.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Hypothenar Hammer Syndrome

Damage to the ulnar artery from repeated use of the heel of the hand as a hammer, causing aneurysm or thrombosis and cold, painful fingers.
