Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

This is the most common site of retroperitoneal fluid, usually from acute pancreatitis, which spreads through the space and can track along the gutters. Perforations of the retroperitoneal duodenum or colon also leak here, often with few early signs.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Peripancreatic Fluid Collection

Inflammatory fluid from acute pancreatitis spreading through the anterior pararenal space, which may become infected or form a pseudocyst.

Retroperitoneal Duodenal Perforation

A tear of the duodenum from trauma or endoscopy leaking into this space, sometimes seen as air around the right kidney on imaging.
