Dorsal Scaphotrapezial Ligament

ligamentum scaphotrapeziale dorsale

The dorsal scaphotrapezial ligament connects the dorsal distal scaphoid to the dorsal trapezium, providing dorsal stability to the scaphotrapezial joint and contributing to the scaphoid distal pole constraint.

Region: Hand & Wrist
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Stabilises the dorsal aspect of the STT joint, resists dorsal trapezium displacement on the scaphoid, and contributes to scaphoid distal pole position maintenance.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The dorsal scaphotrapezial ligament is disrupted in STT joint dislocation (rare) and is addressed in STT arthrodesis. Its tension affects scaphoid rotation — release of the dorsal ST ligament can reduce scaphoid flexion in DISI correction.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

STT Joint Dislocation with Ligament Disruption

Rare dorsal scaphotrapezial ligament disruption allowing STT joint dislocation, requiring reduction and ligament repair or STT fusion for stability.
