Gastric Lymph Nodes

nodi lymphoidei gastrici

The gastric lymph nodes lie along the lesser and greater curvatures of the stomach, following the left and right gastric and gastro-omental (gastroepiploic) arteries. Together with nodes around the cardia and pylorus they form the first filters for lymph from the stomach.

  • Abdominal oesophagus (left gastric nodes)
  • Proximal duodenum (pyloric nodes)

Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Filter lymph from the stomach before it reaches the coeliac nodes.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Gastric cancer spreads early to these perigastric nodes, and the number of involved nodes is central to staging; at least 15-16 nodes are usually examined after gastrectomy. Surgeons describe the extent of node removal as D1 (perigastric) or D2 (also along the coeliac branches). Rich lymphatic connections allow spread to distant groups, including Virchow node.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Perigastric Lymph Node Metastasis

Spread of gastric cancer to the nodes along the curvatures, which influences prognosis and the extent of surgery.

Gastric Lymphoma Nodal Involvement

Spread of gastric MALT or diffuse large B cell lymphoma to adjacent gastric nodes.
