bursa gluteofemoralis

The gluteofemoral bursa lies beneath the lower part of the gluteus maximus, between its tendon and the upper vastus lateralis near the gluteal tuberosity of the femur. It is one of the intermuscular bursae of the gluteal region.

Anatomical Data

Location

LocationBetween the deep surface of the gluteus maximus tendon and the origin of vastus lateralis, below the greater trochanter

Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Reduces friction between the gluteus maximus tendon and the vastus lateralis during hip movement

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Fluid in this bursa can be seen on MRI in patients with lateral hip and upper thigh pain and should be distinguished from the trochanteric bursae above it. It is a less common source of symptoms than the subgluteus maximus bursa.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Gluteofemoral Bursitis

Inflammation of the bursa between the gluteus maximus tendon and vastus lateralis causing lateral upper thigh pain just below the greater trochanter.
