Trigeminothalamic Tract

tractus trigeminothalamicus

The trigeminothalamic tracts carry sensation from the face to the thalamus. The ventral tract crosses and carries pain, temperature and touch; a smaller dorsal tract carries touch from the same side.

Anatomical Data

Structure & Connections

LocationFrom the trigeminal sensory nuclei through the brainstem to the ventral posteromedial nucleus of the thalamus
Parts
  • Ventral (anterior) trigeminothalamic tract
  • Dorsal (posterior) trigeminothalamic tract
Connections
Blood SupplyBasilar artery and vertebral artery branches; Posterior cerebral artery
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Brings facial pain, temperature and touch to conscious perception.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

In lateral medullary syndrome, pain and temperature are lost on the same side of the face (spinal nucleus) and the opposite side of the body; brainstem lesions higher up affect the face on the opposite side because the tract has crossed.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Facial Sensory Loss from Brainstem Stroke

Loss of facial pain and temperature sense whose side depends on the level of the lesion.
