Nucleus Dorsalis of Clarke

nucleus thoracicus posterior

Clarke nucleus (nucleus dorsalis or posterior thoracic nucleus) is a column of large neurons at the base of the dorsal horn from about C8 to L2-L3. It is the source of the dorsal spinocerebellar tract.

Anatomical Data

Structure & Connections

LocationMedial base of the dorsal horn, lamina VII, from C8 to L2-L3
Parts
  • Large relay neurons
Connections
Blood SupplyPosterior spinal arteries; Anterior spinal artery
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Relays unconscious position sense from the lower limb and trunk to the cerebellum.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Leg proprioceptive fibres entering below L3 ascend in the fasciculus gracilis to reach it. It degenerates in Friedreich ataxia, contributing to unsteady gait.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Friedreich Ataxia

Inherited degeneration of spinocerebellar pathways, dorsal columns and Clarke nucleus causing progressive ataxia.
