Median Eminence

eminentia mediana

The median eminence is a small swelling at the base of the hypothalamus where the pituitary stalk begins. Hypothalamic releasing hormones are released here into portal blood vessels that carry them to the anterior pituitary.

Anatomical Data

Structure & Connections

LocationFloor of the third ventricle, part of the tuber cinereum, at the top of the infundibulum
Parts
  • Nerve terminals of hypothalamic neurons
  • Primary capillary plexus of the hypophyseal portal system
  • Tanycytes
Connections
  • Arcuate and paraventricular nuclei
  • Hypophyseal portal veins
  • Anterior pituitary
Blood SupplySuperior hypophyseal arteries
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Delivers hypothalamic releasing and inhibiting hormones into the portal system that controls the anterior pituitary.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Damage to the stalk or median eminence from surgery, trauma or tumours cuts hypothalamic control, causing loss of most pituitary hormones but a rise in prolactin, which is normally held back by dopamine released here.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Pituitary Stalk Section

Injury interrupting hypothalamic control, causing hypopituitarism and mild high prolactin.
