Lateral Apertures of the Fourth Ventricle

apertura lateralis ventriculi quarti

The lateral apertures, or foramina of Luschka, are paired openings at the outer tips of the lateral recesses of the fourth ventricle. They let cerebrospinal fluid escape into the subarachnoid space at the cerebellopontine angle, and tufts of choroid plexus often poke out of them.

Anatomical Data

Structure & Connections

LocationEnds of the lateral recesses of the fourth ventricle, at the cerebellopontine angle near the flocculus and the roots of cranial nerves VII, VIII and IX
Parts
  • Lateral recess openings
  • Protruding choroid plexus (Bochdalek flower basket)
Connections
Blood SupplyAnterior inferior cerebellar artery (choroid plexus of the lateral recess)
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Provide two side exits for cerebrospinal fluid from the fourth ventricle to the subarachnoid space.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The protruding choroid plexus at the foramen of Luschka is a landmark in cerebellopontine angle surgery and can be mistaken for a small lesion on imaging. Ependymomas of the fourth ventricle may grow out through the foramina of Luschka and wrap around cranial nerves and vessels, making removal harder.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Ependymoma Extension Through the Foramen of Luschka

Spread of a fourth ventricle tumour out into the cerebellopontine angle, encasing nerves and arteries.

Choroid Plexus Papilloma of the Cerebellopontine Angle

A rare tumour arising from choroid plexus at the foramen of Luschka, causing hearing loss or hydrocephalus.
