Central Tegmental Tract

tractus tegmentalis centralis

The central tegmental tract is a bundle running through the core of the midbrain and pons. It carries fibres from the red nucleus down to the inferior olive, and taste fibres up from the solitary nucleus.

Anatomical Data

Structure & Connections

LocationCentral tegmentum of the midbrain and pons, from the red nucleus to the inferior olivary nucleus
Parts
  • Rubro-olivary fibres
  • Ascending gustatory fibres
  • Reticular formation fibres
Connections
Blood SupplyBasilar artery (pontine branches); Posterior cerebral artery branches
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Forms part of a motor control loop (red nucleus to olive to cerebellum) and relays taste.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Damage within the triangle of Guillain and Mollaret, which includes this tract, can cause hypertrophic olivary degeneration and palatal or oculopalatal tremor months later.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Palatal Tremor

Rhythmic movement of the soft palate after damage to the dentato-rubro-olivary pathway.
