Arbor Vitae

arbor vitae cerebelli

Arbor vitae ("tree of life") is the branching pattern of white matter seen when the cerebellum is cut in half, with grey cortex covering each branch like leaves.

Anatomical Data

Structure & Connections

LocationCore of the cerebellum, especially visible in the vermis on a midline section
Parts
Connections
Blood SupplySuperior cerebellar artery; Anterior inferior cerebellar artery; Posterior inferior cerebellar artery
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Carries fibres into and out of the cerebellar cortex.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Its pattern is easily seen on sagittal MRI, where thinning of the folia indicates cerebellar atrophy. Some metabolic and inherited diseases cause visible white matter changes here.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Cerebellar Atrophy

Shrinkage of the cerebellum with widened spaces between folia on MRI.
