Anterior Cingulate Cortex

cortex cingularis anterior

The anterior cingulate cortex is the front part of the cingulate gyrus, curving around the front of the corpus callosum. It links emotion, motivation, attention and control of behaviour.

Anatomical Data

Structure & Connections

LocationMedial frontal lobe, around the genu of the corpus callosum (Brodmann areas 24, 32, 33 and subgenual 25)
Parts
  • Dorsal (cognitive) part
  • Ventral and subgenual (emotional) parts
Connections
Blood SupplyAnterior cerebral artery (callosomarginal and pericallosal branches)
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Detects errors and conflicts, weighs effort against reward, regulates emotion and processes the unpleasantness of pain.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

Damage on both sides can cause severe apathy and akinetic mutism. The subgenual area is overactive in depression and is a target for deep brain stimulation, and cingulotomy has been used for intractable pain and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Akinetic Mutism

Profound lack of movement and speech from bilateral anterior cingulate damage.

Major Depression

Mood disorder with abnormal activity in the subgenual cingulate cortex.
