Nerve to Peroneus Brevis

nervus musculi fibularis brevis

A motor branch of the superficial peroneal nerve supplying peroneus brevis, arising in the lateral compartment of the leg. Its isolation in EMG assessment helps distinguish common peroneal nerve injury levels.

Region: Lower Leg
Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The nerve to peroneus brevis and the nerve to peroneus longus are branches of the superficial peroneal nerve that arise sequentially in the lateral leg compartment. Selective peroneus brevis weakness with intact longus suggests a distal superficial peroneal lesion. Peroneus brevis EMG is part of the standard lateral compartment assessment in peroneal neuropathy and L5 radiculopathy workup.

Peroneus Brevis EMG in Lateral Compartment Assessment

EMG of peroneus brevis alongside peroneus longus and tibialis anterior distinguishes common peroneal nerve injury level from L5 radiculopathy by pattern of denervation across compartments.
