Lateral Hip Capsule at Thigh Level

capsula articularis lateralis coxae (pars femoralis)

The lateral hip capsule at the femoral neck level blends with the iliofemoral and ischiofemoral ligament fibres, forming the lateral containment for the femoral head. The tensor fascia lata and gluteus medius tendons overlie this capsule laterally.

Region: Thigh
Biomechanics

Function & Actions

Lateral femoral head containment; resists lateral distraction; reinforced by the zona orbicularis circular fibres already documented.

Clinical Relevance

Clinical Notes

The lateral hip capsule at the femoral level is addressed in hip arthroscopy peripheral compartment procedures. In total hip arthroplasty lateral approaches, the lateral capsule is incised to access the femoral head and must be repaired for hip stability. Capsular laxity of the lateral component from repetitive distraction (hip distraction injury in contact sports) produces microinstability.

Pathology

Common Injuries & Conditions

Lateral Hip Capsular Laxity from Distraction Injury

Lateral hip capsule stretching from hip distraction in contact sports producing lateral hip pain and microinstability, managed by hip arthroscopy and capsular plication.
